The oak processionary moth (in Danish: ‘Egeprocessionsspinder’) has established itself in Odense. While the adult moth is harmless, its caterpillars can pose a risk to both people and animals due to the thousands of tiny, irritating hairs they develop during their later growth stages.

These hairs can be carried by the wind and may cause itchy skin rashes, eye irritation, coughing and, in rare cases, breathing difficulties.

What should you do?

If you see caterpillars, nests or signs of infestation, please report your findings to Odense Municipality using the “Give a Tip” service. Public reports help the municipality map the spread of the species and prioritise control efforts.

Residents are advised not to touch or remove caterpillars or nests themselves. Removal requires specialised protective equipment and must be carried out by trained professionals.

If you come into contact with the hairs

Avoid touching the caterpillars, their nests, or vegetation surrounding infested trees. If contact occurs:

  • Rinse exposed skin carefully with warm water and wash thoroughly afterwards.
  • Rinse eyes with clean water if irritation occurs.
  • Wash contaminated clothing at a minimum of 60°C.
  • Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe or if breathing difficulties develop.

Pets and animals

Dogs, cats, horses and other animals can suffer similar reactions if they come into contact with the hairs. Pet owners should be especially vigilant when walking in affected areas.
